Discussion of Alice Munro's short story "Passion" - and how this presents elements unique to Canadian literature in general and Munro's writing in particular.


Film Analysis and Visual Literacy

An introduction to vertents through which film can be analysed at an academic level as presented in Timothy Corrigan's A Short Guide to Writing about Film
The of narrative aspects of the film can be examined through: national cinema, film history, genre,, autheur and ideology - all of which can also be applied to literary analysis.
However, analysis of visual aspects requires visual literacy. Introduced student to the components of visual literacy with exemplification.
We then watched the opening sequences of Sarah Polley's  Away from Her. Then  showed films still from these sections which students analysed using visual literacy analysis techniques. Discussion of how these still fortell the whole story and prepare the viewer for what they will see. 



Discussion of Margaret Atwood's theory of survival + close reading

Discussion of Margaret Atwood's theory of survival as applied to Michael McGowen's film One Week - particular attention was paid to the victim positions


+ discussion of students' close reading of the introductory segment of Alice Munro's short story "Passion".

Students must read the rest of "Passion" for next Monday's class where it will be discussed for content and in terms of Survival.

Analysis of Michael McGowen's road movie  One Week in light of Margaret Atwood's theory of Survival


Comparison of sections of One Week with a more conventional Hollywood style road movie - Cameron Crowe's Elizabethtown (2005).
Comparison of narrator, narrative arc, solution etc.
Discussion of the Introduction to Atwood's Survival 

For next class students need to review the character of Ben Taylor, the protagonist of One Week in light of Atwood's victim positions. 
You also need to close read the opening three pages of Alice Munro's short story "Passion" (in manual) for next class.
