Review of the extract from Sports and Games in Canada which covered the period up unto 1700s to give students a feel for the structure of the day-to-day life in Canada from its first settlement by Europeans up to that time.


Then more details review of the historical moments from the first settlement by Vikings up to 1497 "discovery" by John Cabot and the development during the 1500s.

Discussion of the comparisons and similarities of Silverspot and Ben Taylor (One Week) as typical, flawe,  everyman Canadian heroes.
Review of Elspeth Cameron's Introduction to Canadian Culture: An Introductory Reader

Students must read chapters 1 & 2 from Sports and Hames in Canadian Life: 1700 to the Present.

Student discussion of Elspeth Cameron's Introduction to Canadian Culture: An Introductory Reading. This chapter will be reviewed in the next class.

Students will reading Robert Seaton's short story "Silverspot: The Story of a Crow" from Wild Animals I Have Known for next class.

Students must read her proposals on Victim Positions and Elizbeth Cameron's Introduction to Canadian Culture for next class, so that the film can be discussed in light of these.
