The use of literature to influence the political agenda in Canada - analysis of the opening extract from Frances Brooke's The History of Emily Montague  and discussion of how this portrays the British colonial attitude both towards the First Nations peoples and the French settlers and how this was used to try to influence public and political opinion in Quebec and Britian after the Treaty of Paris.


The influences of First Nations literary traditions on contemporary Canadian literature - discuss of the traditions of First Nations declamatory poetry - reading and discussion of Chief Dan George's "Lament for Confederation" and the impact this had on the public who heard it in 1987 and continued influence. Discussion of biotext withing the context of the First Nations declamatory poetry.

Life in New France

Based on the reading of the chapter "The People and their Social Activites" we discussed the social structure of New France in 16th century (Quebec's mini-Versailles, the semi-fundal seigneurial system and the role of the coureurs de bois and their interaction with the native populations). 

Also comparison of the French system in Lower Canada/Quebec and British system in Upper Canada (Ontario). 

We also discussed the 7 years war, the Treaty of Paris and the Quebec Act - showing how Canada always required/or managed to achieve some form of concesus in its government.
