Translating Emotion: Musical and Poetical Readings of Nichita Stănescu’s Emoție de toamnă

For the Romanian poet Nichita Stănescu (1933-1983), “the only real things which we take with us in the end are our own feelings, our lovers…” (http://www.romanianvoice.com/poezii/poezii/gand6.php). Although his lifelong creation had to face the rigors of Ceausescu’s dictatorship, he was devoted to this credo which won him wide acclaim and recognition.
The poem “Emoție de toamnă”, published in 1964 in the volume O viziune a sentimentelor, is a fecund field for translative experiments as well as for intercultural experiences.
In order to make this “emoție de toamnă” real, in accord with Nichita Stănescu’s sense of emotional reality, we shall focus on the concept of “defamiliarization” launched by Viktor Shklovsky (1965 [1917]: 12-13) and on Paul Ricoeur’s notion of “appropriation” (1976: 43), then on Lawrence Venuti’s (2008 [1995]: 20) ideal of foreignizing translation.
With these (hopefully useful) notions in mind, we shall invite students to read (and enjoy!) a few translations of the Romanian poem into English and Portuguese, and propose their own.
