This curricular unit will cover three broad areas:

1)       Marketing and Advertising

·         Considering brands, logos, slogans and  campaigns -translating abstract and cultural concepts

·         Tourism- campaigns, brochures, menus  

 

Students should bring laptops and earphones for research in class as of 26 February

 

2)      Journalsitic texts

·         newspapers (general news and economics) – no access to telephones, computers or dictionaries

 

ASSESSMENT

 

April 4 and 9 - group presentation ( groups of 4 - 20 minutes per group) – translating the script of an advertisement campaign .

Students choose a Portuguese advertisement. The Portuguese script must be handed into the teacher ONE week before.

Procedure

Students show the original presentation in class, display their translation and explain how they arrived at their final version, focusing on specific features of the translation (cultural, linguistic, etc).

Additionally, students must give the teacher a written text (750 words), highlighting the problems encountered in the translation and justifying specific translation options. 

This assignment is worth 25% of the final mark.

RULES AND REQUIREMENTS

·         Classes will begin 10 minutes after the hour and will generally end 5 minutes before;

·         Working groups made up of 4 students will be formed at the beginning of the semester. These groups will work together in all classes;

·          Use of mobile phones in class is prohibited, unless specifically allowed for research purposes;

·         Whenever plagiarism is suspected, a score of  0% will be attributed to the respective assignment;

 NB

Unless you are registered as a worker student, you must attend at least 70% of classes.  Students who do not meet the attendance requirements and have not duly justified their absences will see a reduction of 10% to their overall mark.·
