The lecture explored the evolution of the visual context in supporting the creation of personas for global music bands. In particular, it analysed the case of the band Gorillaz, focusing on their ambiguous virtual and real existence, and their representation across 2D, 3D, and holographic forms. The discussion then turned to the phenomenon of voguing, through a close reading of Madonna’s iconic video "Vogue". This analysis was framed within a critical socio-cultural perspective, addressing the processes of reinterpretation and cultural translation, and evaluating the video as an act of cultural appropriation. Additionally, attention was given to the visual medium’s role, especially in relation to its representation of Old Hollywood, examined through Laura Mulvey’s critical lens. Due to technical difficulties that delayed the lecture, only a structural introduction to the narrative video album "Lemonade" by Beyoncé was provided, with a decision to postpone the close analysis to a future session.

Gender Based Violence in Graphic Narratives

The lecture, dedicated to the representation of gender-based violence in graphic narratives, began with a critical discussion aimed at clarifying the cultural and terminological distinctions between Gender Violence and Violence Against Womxn. Drawing on Stuart Hall, the session explored the semiotic and discursive approaches, as well as concepts of transmediality and intermediality. A more in-depth analysis, including suggested readings and reflections – ranging from comics and graphic novels to photojournalism and the media adaptation of these forms – is available on the e-learning platform in the slides provided by the guest speaker.
