The students were introduced to the contextualisation of Visual Culture as a discipline, followed by a focus on the figures of Saussure, Barthes, and Hall, as well as the semiotic vocabulary proposed for the analysis of images as texts. The lesson concluded with a group activity, during which some students presented an image or gesture and explained its analysis using the vocabulary they had acquired. Clarifications on the written and oral exams were offered.

Introduction and Lesson Plan
11 Fevereiro 2025, 11:00 • Marzia D'Amico
After a brief introduction by the lecturer, the topics and methods of discussion and assessment were outlined. It was decided to present the course through a flexible schedule of topics, allowing space for autonomous discussions among students. A list of the subject areas, along with supporting readings, was made available on the e-learning platform, and the access password was shared. The formal assessment method (participation, written exam, individual oral presentation) was explained, and a discussion about the background and interests of the students took place, aiming to clarify both the lecturer's and students' expectations regarding the course.
