We concluded with a brief discussion of the novel as a bildungsroman: is there a particular path of growth represented here? Is Liborio moving towards some resolution or redemption? Then, class took an in-class written exam, focusing on the competing ideas of theU.S.–Mexico border in the texts so far.

Today we focused on the novel’s depiction of the violence of the life of the central immigrant protagonist, as well as the dangerous process of illegal migration across the Rio Grande, which is depicted in lengthy and harrowing detail. Students were asked to consider the novel in light of the controversy around a border wall and the notion of American identity that a border wall communicates.

Began Aura Xilonen’s Campeón gabacho / The Gringo Champion, which we read in translation. First class focused on the linguistic inventiveness of this novel, which is written in an esoteric blend of Golden Age Spanish, contemporary Mexican Spanish, border “Spanglish,” and various anglicisms Its translation is a major challenge, and we spent much of today’s class reviewing the Spanish original and the translation of the novel’s first paragraph to assess the choices made by the translator.
