What was the Enlightenment?

This lesson looked at the Enlightenment as an intellectual and cultural movement in Europe. To introduce the enlightenment the focus of the class was earlier thinkers and natural philosophers such as John Locke, Francis Bacon and Isaac Newton to understand how early scientific thought contributed to the Enlightenment movement. 


Gender and Popular belief

Beliefs about gender, the body and social roles. Was gender biological or performative? Through the analysis of theories, social codes and popular belief such as the humoral model, sexual temperament and representation (dress, behaviour) in this class we explored women and men in early modern England, from the (17th and 18th century).

What was English society and culture in the 17th and early 18th century?

This lesson looks at changes that occurred as a result of colonial expansion, economic development and social movement. 
We also look at gender roles, the rising middle class, different professions, demographics and other aspects of English society.


Emigration to the Colonies

Emigration to the early colonies: what led people to leave for another land? Conditions, promises, hopes and disillusionment.

Voluntary and involuntary migration.
The importance of songs and ballads - such as the broadside ballad - in both promoting nationhood, colonialism, but also in story telling about the dangers and as warnings (against piracy, indentured labour). 
Other cultures that emerge as resistance and from the fusion of forms such as the Negro Spirituals. 


Protecting the Empire

This lesson looked at the rise of England from a European nation to a global power as a result of colonial expansion and exploitation, mercantilism and protectionism of trade and maritime routes, limiting rival powers and a growing territorial and maritime empire.
