REMINDER: The writing test will be held on Monday 12th December.

Article from Tatler magazine about the acceptability of certain words. In this case the word "toilet". This was followed by an article from The Daily Telegraph (03.12.16) about acceptable behaviour for upper class people nowadays. Demonstration of how newspapers not only reflect their readership but also define them in linguistic and social terms.

The week in review: three students' individual oral presentations. Newspaper columns: (a)  How to write journalism | Peter Cole and Michael White on writing columns (The Guardian); (b) the "me" column: two pieces by op-ed columnist Lenore Skenazy - "Why I Let My 9-Year-Old Ride the Subway Alone" and "More From America's Worst Mom: 9-Year-Old On The Subway, Continued". HOMEWORK: Write a "me" column on a topic of interest to you (800-1,000 words). This writing assignment is due on Wednesday, 7th November. TEXT 14 ("Sorry We Stole Your Stuff") is an example of a "me" column.
