Today, TP2 finished reading and analyzing Diane Abbott's editorial (Text 1).  Those who missed today's class should finish reading the text and identifying the techniques within it.  We then began reading Text 2: Rebecca Solnit's editorial about Jeffrey Epstein's birthday book.

Those who missed today's class should read the first half of Text 2.

Next class: we'll be finishing Text 2 and possibly begin reading Text 3.

TYPES OF METAPHOR

Guided small-group discussion about the film Il Postino and what is says about metaphor.

Presentation on standard, implied, visual and extended metaphors, as well as mixed and dead metaphors.

Small group work exercise on how we label the people we observe, as a lead-in to watching Coke’s “Labels are for cans not people” ad and discussing the metaphors in it.
