Reading Students' Awesome Essays

Today, TP6 began to go through former student Madalena Ramalho's awesome essay entitled: The Permanent Matter of Food in Jumpa Lahiri’s “A Temporary Matter”.

We identified her use of persuasive writing techniques, of the 3 Cs (clarity, concision, cohesion), and her adherence to the success criteria.  

Next class: we will finish reading Madalena Ramalho's excellent essay and move on to Daniela Marques's essay entitled: Compromised Vision: The symbolic objects of misinterpretation in Jhumpa Lahiri’s “Interpreter of Maladies”.


ORAL PRESENTATION GUIDELINES

Small group discussion on good and bad presentations experienced, and what makes them so. Feedback.

Presentation on the expectations and specifications for the oral presentation videos on stand-up comedians as part of the course evaluation.

Video suggesting 4 killer steps to starting a presentation.

Example of a very good presentation video by a previous student on the course. Discussion about what makes it good.

Tutorial/4th hour work:  Grammar practice.

Homework: Watch the romcoms Bridget Jones’s Diary and While You Were Sleeping.


Inversion in conditionals

Today we practiced inversion in conditionals (Course pack, p. 15) and worked on the pre-reading exercise for “The Monkey’s Paw” (p. 16), which we will discuss on Thursday. Please make sure you have read it by then.

Unreal past; inversion in conditionals

Today we talked about using the past to refer to unreal situations (“unreal past”) and practiced with exercises 1 and 2 (course pack, pp. 14–15). We also reviewed the rules for conditional sentences and began working on inversion in conditionals (pp. 14–15).

Homework (for Tuesday, April 7): Please read “The Monkey’s Paw” by W. W. Jacobs (Course pack, pp. 17–22). It is essential that you come to class prepared to discuss it.
