1. OBJECTIVES

2. ASSESSMENT AND GRADING SYSTEM

Assessment will be continuous, and will consist of the following:

  • In-House Essay:          15%
  • Written test:              30%
  • In-house debate:       20%
  • Assignment on novel: 15%
  • Attendance:               10%
  • Participation:             15%


2.1. Date for the In-House Essay:                 November 3

2.2. Dates for the Oxford-Style Debates:    November 9, November 17, November 30, December 7, December 14 & 15

 

NB: Each group will be assigned one of the dates to do their in-house debate; If you do not come to class on the day you are meant to do your in-house essay or participate in the group debate, you will get 0.

 

2.3. Written Test:      November 23 (in-house) OR December 11 (via Zoom)

 

2.4. Assignment on novel

The assignment on the novel will consist of the following:

  • One abstract of between 150 and 200 words (see ‘Writing an abstract’ section in ‘Instructions for novel project’) plus a bibliography;
  • One ten-minute video where you answer the question you previously selected from the list (see ‘Novel Discussion Questions’).
  • Deadline to submit the video: December 18, 2020.

 

NB: The abstract can be submitted before the video is sent or at the same time (mind that if you submit the abstract and the video simultaneously you will not be given feedback on the first)

 

3. BIBLIOGRAPHY

  • The course book is available at the Green photocopy shop and online (see ULisboa’s e-learning website).
  • Compulsory reading: The Girl with all the Gifts (2014) by M.R. Carey

The novel will be read outside the classroom and will be discussed in class on the stipulated date (see calendar). There is a research project on the novel worth 15% of the final mark.

 

Dictionaries: students are expected to have at least one of the following dictionaries:

  • Collins Cobuild Dictionary of English Language
  • Longman Dictionary of English Language and Culture
  • Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary of Current English
  • The New Penguin English Dictionary
