Immigrant commnities in Canada

Students presented the history of the Chinese and Japanese emigration to Canada and discussed the extracts from Fred Wah's Diamond Grill and Hiromi Goto's Chorus of Mushrooms in this light. 
Asked students to watch the video "1966 Codfishing on the Santa Maria" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Git-48_CPww and to read Anthony da Sá 2 short stories "Fado" and "Pounding their Shadows" for next class in preperation for next class's discussion on the Portuguese in Canada. The short stories (as well as all the extra literary texts) are in the Red Copy Shop.

Nationalism in Canadian Literature + first novel

Students presented Frank Watt's essay on "Nationalism in Canadian Literature" and we discussed how literature was important in the construction of a nation identity.

The opening section of Francis Brooke's novel The History of Emily Montague was also discussed both within the context of the history of its time and literature of that time. The political dimension of this novel was also discussed.
