- Language and the brain (neurolinguistics): the basics of the brain and its working with respect to language (hearing, reading, producing); the language specialisation of the left hemisphere, in particular Broca's and Wernicke's area.
- The study of brain lesions and trauma for our understanding of language processing: Broca's aphasia, with an illustrative video and examples.

- Review of the main areas of knowledge of language (phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, lexicon), with examples;

- Linguistic competence vs. linguistic performance;
- Pragmatics and pragmatic knowledge: definition and fundamentals;
- Examples of pragmatic uses of language (inferences, implicatures, presuppositions, figures of speech).
