« One of the major thematic strains in Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights is otherness. It is presented through a series of narrative or linguistic strategies which can be perceived from the first chapter of the bookwhen the reader is presented with the setting of the ‘primal [separation] scene’ betweenCatherine and Heathcliff, a violent scene which is repeatedly re-enacted until they are eventually united again. On the threshold of the narrative certain tropes, especially metaphors and transferred epithets, shape the uncanny nature of the place as they animate or even bring out the wild side of its inanimate elements. It is all the more important that these tropes should be translated as they embody what is at stake in thetext : an attempt at representing otherness. Examples taken from various translations will show that translators have sometimes not translated these tropes and their refusal to do so might point to a kind of linguistic taming of a book described as "hewn in a wild workshop" when it was published.»(Palimpsestes,17, p. 132)
