This week we continued the discussion of the phenomenon of context-sensitivity: context-shifting and incompleteness arguments for context-sensitivity; distinction between Indexical and non-Indexical forms of context-sensitivity; the structure of the debate: Semantic Minimalism, Radical and Moderate Contextualism. We also discussed the semantics/pragmatics distinction; strategies for moderate contextualists (Surprise Indexical, Hidden indexical, and Unarticulated Constituent strategies); and tests for context-sensitivity.

This week we overviewed the topic of logical form and discussed the usefulness and the limitations in using logical form to represent natural language.

We also had an introduction to the phenomenon of context sensitivity and Kaplan’s theory of indexicals.
