The Silence of the Lambs and Little Red Riding Hood
11 Maio 2016, 10:00 • David Alan Prescott
Analysis of similarities in story between these two works and of the aspect of theme. In Little Red Riding Hood the women are weak and useless, but in the version by Harris/Tally/Demme this is a feminist tale.
Subtext and Use of Names
9 Maio 2016, 10:00 • David Alan Prescott
Brief revision of the major differences between Sommersby and Le Retour de Martin Guerre in order to make the former a great movie rather than something that respects reality.
Showing of scenes from Chinatown to explain how names are repeated multiple times in the original dialogue soundtrack but often cut out int he subtitles. Explaining that it is never too much to use names.
Subtext: "sex scene" in Chinatown is really an innocent case of a woman helping a man clean a wound on his nose.
Subtext: in Cape Fear the game of squash between the male protagonist and a "co-worker" is really the same as them having sex. (Or perhaps worse)
Explanation of linguistic avoidance: "freaking" in order not to say "fucking" -- in the end society understands that they are just the same.

The Wife of Martin Guerre / Le Retour de Martin Guerre
2 Maio 2016, 10:00 • David Alan Prescott
Explanation of the true story of Martin Guerre, who left his wife for 8 years and was replaced by an impostor who pretended to be him. When the impostor/thief is later challenged by Guerre's family and this goes to court the real Martin Guerre appears and the impostor, Arnaud du Tilh, is hanged and burned and condemned to Hell. (This is 16th century France). The wife is also excommunicated for adultery. The French film follows the story absolutely literally.
This lesson is a prelude to showing the movie Sommersby on Wednesday.
