1.     Read the extract from Roland Barthes’ Camera Lucida and (i) summarise Barthes’ theory of photographic meaning; and ii) distinguish the terms studium and punctum.

2.     Bring one or two images to class that illustrate these two ways of being affected by a photograph.

1. Read “Images, Power and Politics”, pp. 37-48 (from “Images and Ideology” to the end), and identify key theories and concepts: ideology, portraiture, icon.

2. Examine development of photography from the 19^th century to the present day, as well as its the social and cultural role.

3. Select two image icons and discuss the historical and social context from which they emerged and gained meaning.

4. Informed by Dorothea Lange’s Migrant Mother, examine the treatment of motherhood in painting and photography.

A partir da leitura e comentário do texto de Italo Calvino «A luz nos olhos» ( Colecção de Areia, 1984), tentativa de sistematização de alguns aspectos relacionados com o carácter cultural do acto de ver: a diversidade histórica das teorias da visão, filosóficas e científicas, e a inextricabilidade entre sensação e entendimento; a complexidade da relação do ser humano com as cores, do espectro visível ao pigmento, com especial destaque para alguns momentos da história da arte, como o Fauvismo ou a invenção do International Klein Blue por Yves Klein. Breve referência à obra  Blue, de Derek Jarman, e às diversas reverberações físicas e simbólicas da cor no filme.
