Oral presentations continued: A press review: Your pick of stories - (a) Margarida Pereira; and )b) Joana Pereira.

Discussion of David Puttnam's TEDx talk "Does the media have a duty of care?" , "The popular press. Life in the global gutter" (The Economist)  (TEXT 11) and "Monitoring the popular press: an historical perspective" (History and Policy) (TEXT 12): students were grouped in threes in the Zoom breakout rooms and had to prepare an oral report on one of the questions already sent by email. Their reports will be presented on Monday, 16th November.


Vocabulary-expansion exercise based on vocabulary from TEXTS 5-11. Editorials continued.

Checking the answers to a vocabulary-expansion exercise based on vocabulary from READING MATTERS TEXTS 5-11. 

Editorials continued: (a) analysing the structure and style of an evidence-based editorial based on TEXT 13: "Race and marijuana arrests" (New York Times) and TEXT 14: "Prison works ..." (The Independent) continued: opinion stated; reasons stated to support this opinion; facts that support this opinion; author's suggestions for dealing with the topic of the editorial. 
(b) "Start with power and finish with purpose": looking at beginnings and endings of various editorials from British and American papers sent by email (strongly worded opinions and calls to action).
(c) Four main types of editorials: persuasive; analysis and explanatory; obituary; endorsement.
(d) differences between an editorial and an opinion essay.There will be one last class about editorials on Tuesday (10th November).HOMEWORK for Monday's Zoom class: instructions sent by email.

General feedback on the response paper assignments. 
Editorials: analysing the structure and style of an editorial based on two examples  TEXT 13: "Race and marijuana arrests" (New York Times) and TEXT 14: "Prison works ..." (The Independent) (to be continued on Thursday).
HOMEWORK: do the vocabulary-expansion exercise based on vocabulary from TEXTS 5-11. The answers will be checked on Thursday.

HOMEWORK: Vocabulary-expansion exercise based on Texts 5-11. The answers to this exercise will be checked on Tuesday, 3rd November.

Comparing and contrasting two news stories as reported by a quality paper and a tabloid continued.

 Comparing and contrasting the language features and overall style of two news stories reporting the same event continued: TEXT 9 "Pride of Britain Awards 2011 ...", Daily Mirror; TEXT 10 - "Pensioner prevented jewellery raid ...", The Guardian; making judgements about the kind of audience the articles were written for.

HOMEWORK: Read READING MATTERS TEXTS 11 and 12 at home. these texts will be discussed on Monday's Zoom class.
