Students continued their discussion on what makes something a language exmining various characteristics of language. We then read an article on Emoji and it's potential to become a language.


A student then presented on the cultural artifact Duolingo, a website for language learning, and how it can be used to improve our English or other foreign languages .

Students reviewed various prepositions and prepositional phrases and then practiced their use through a grammar exercise involving the educational technology Kahoot!  A student presented on the cultural artifact by Poe, the poem "A Dream Within A Dream." The presentation revolved around Poe's history, his works, and our interpretation of the poem.  


Students were then introduced to the topic of socio-linguistics and discussed what makes something a language.

Students were given a lecture on collegiate athletics in the U.S. as this seemed to be a topic that interested many students after our discussion of the cost of higher education.  Athletic scholarships, the popularity of college sports in the U.S., the lives of student athletes, and the exploitation of students athletes were all topics examined.


A student then presented on the cultural artifact "Mad Men" and discussed the portrayal of women in the show and the gender equality of women in 1950's and 1960's America and today.

Students were given a grammar lesson in reported speech by examining the cultural artifact of the comic strip.  Students then practiced creating reported speech by explaining what was happening in the comic strips. 


A student presented on the cultural artifact, Salmon Fishing in Yemen (novel).  The novel discussed the cultural difference between the west and the middle east and how they can be addressed.  The following class discussion and instructor lesson dealt with the America and England's roles in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Students were introduced to their final project which would be a reflection on their learnings.
