Students were introduced to both the song and blog/website cultural artifacts and watched instructor presentations on both.  The song discussed was Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." Students learned about the song's history and how it reflects upon the differences of rural and urban American cities and the death of the American dream.  Students then watched a presentation on the website VICE News.  Students learned about this news site and examined current event it reported on; the requirement of immigrants to England being deported if the dont learn English within two years of their arrival.

Students reviewed the blog creation process and shared their blogs with their classmates.  Students were then introduced to the a movie cultural artifact presentation on "The Big Short."  The students discussed the film and the financial crisis in the U.S. and Portugal.


Class 3

Students continued with another introductory activity to learn more about their classmates, they also conducted and interview and answered a language questionnaire on their class blog.  Students were then shown an example of a Current Event cultural artifact presentation by the instructor and engaged in discussion about the upcoming presidential election in the U.S.

Students reviewed class expectations and syllabus and signed up for class presentations.  Students were also engaged in some "ice breaker" activities to get to know their teach and classmates.  Finally students read an article explaining the cultural expectations of a U.S. university classroom and compared and contrasted the similarities and differences between a U.S. and Portuguese university classroom.

Students were introduced to the course syllabus, expectations, and major assignments.  Students were given opportunities to ask questions about the course and course assignments.
