Finished presentation of visual literacy - discussion of students' analysis of film stills.

Began screening of the body of Mira Nair's film The Namesake. This film is an adaptation of Jhumpa Lahiri's novel of the same name. The novel has much internal dialogue which has to be transmitted visually in the film - we looked at how Ashima's feelings about her new life in America are transmitted using film techniques - there is little dialogue in this segment of the film as the main characters, Ashoke and Ashima, get to know each other and adapt to their new life together.

29 Setembro 2022, 18:30 Cecília Maria Beecher Martins

Introduction to concept of semiotics applied to cinema, especially looking at the way directors use the denotative visual elements of cinematic mise-en-scene to create connotative significance in viewers.

Concepts explained with visual illustrations using film stills - students then analysed some film stills using the techniques presented.
We all discussed the plot structure of narrative film and looked at the opening credits of Sarah Polley's Away from Her to show how Polley prepares her audiences for the fact that the film will not end well for its protagonist.
Students must analyse 2 film stills for the next class.
