Students had read Jessica Johnson's short story "A Band Apart" and analyzed it:
1) in terms of reader response
•Underline the things that stand out to you.
•Are
there
unusual/unexpected words? Phrases?
•Write your response to the
story
in 3 minutes.
2) Technically they had to identify:
•Who is telling the story?
•What is the setting like?
•How is this mood introduced?
•Does
the
mood
change as the story is being told?
•When?
•Are
other
voices introduced?
•How is this achieved?
We discussed their answers and then moved on to the analysis of W.B. Yeats's short poem ""The Balloon of the Mind".
They did a textual analysis of this text in groups and then we had a class discussion of their interpretations of the poem.
We then looked at the University of Toronto's "Close reading: How to Perfrom a Literary Analysis (p 24-25 manual) and discussed how using the tools presented here one could interpret a literary text.
Students were instructed to use these tools to perform a literary close reading on Kate Chopin's short story "Ripe Figs" p 26 of the manual for discussion in the next class.
