An introduction to Visual Literacy applied to film still analysis

7 Outubro 2019, 14:00 Cecília Maria Beecher Martins

Review of texts in manual on The Mad Woman upstairs  and Wild Sargasso Sea.  Answered question in manual.

Introduced students to the concepts of visual literacy as applicable to film still analysis - referred to Timothy Corrigan's suggestions of the use of this technique in interpreting narrative film from A Brief Introduction to Writing about Film (Chapter 4 in manual).

Started watching The Talented Mr. Ripley applying visual literacy techniques and also to illustrate how the director used oblique foreshadowing in the introductory section - placing essential elements of the plot development between the credits of the film. In this way viewers are subconsciously "warned" about plot twists. These are still surprising when they happen, but they do not feel out of keeping with the possibilities of the plot line.

The viewing of  The Talented Mr. Ripley is also in preparation of the reading and discussion of Miranda Fricker's chapter on "Testimonial Injustice" as this is one of the films she uses to exemplify her theory.

We attended the concert "from Chopin to the Beatles" by Pamela Rowland where the pianist demonstrated how musical structures reappear in different musical compositions illustrating this point by demonstrating how parallels can be seen in the compositions of Chopin and the Beatles.

Presentation of characteristics and significance present in Gothic literature

30 Setembro 2019, 14:00 Cecília Maria Beecher Martins

Students must read one of four books during the semester. As three of these books ( Jane Eyre  - new (psychological) Gothic, Wild Saragasso Sea (the Gothic transported to the Tropics) and The Madwoman Upstairs - a modern parody of the Gothic) have Gothic features I thought that it would be prudent to give a simple if direct presentation of the motifs present in Gothic literature and their significance as many of the students in the class do not have a background in literary studies.

We also discussed the texts in the manual on Jane Eyre.

Backround to Colm Tóibín's Bad Blood

25 Setembro 2019, 14:00 Cecília Maria Beecher Martins

Reviewed and contextualized the articles in the student manual on Bad Blood and the Anglo-Irish Agreement. Students had already read. these articles so, based on students' questions and my orientation regarding the most important issues in the texts, there was a general discussion of the themes presented as well.
