Close reading Discussion of Novels & OPs

19 Setembro 2018, 10:00 Cecília Maria Beecher Martins

The discussion of the novels revealed that many students had already decided which novel they wished to read, so most students present selected their novels formally

We discussed the oral presentation themes on page 10 of the manual and talked about how the students could approach these using the different texts.

We did close reading exercises with texts from p 26 of Not the Same Sky following the patterns presented on pages 12 & 13 of the manual. This first activity was an explanatory class activity with active student participation.

The exercise was repeated with an extract from p 75 of Exit West. However, in this case after the text was read aloud and students' had annoted their individual texts, the class was broken into groups to encourage individual participation and to show how students will be expected to lead their close reading activity later in the semester.

Students were given the section from The Handmaid's Tale p 136 (I had ... half babies) to do a close reading exercises for the next class.
