The introduction to an essay should contain 3 elements

•       the lead, which catches the attention of the reader,

•       the bridge which connects the lead to the topic,

•        the thesis statement which is a sentence that states the central idea of the whole.

•       The thesis may also indicate if/how you will present your arguments and if you will look at both sides of the issue being presented.

Example [Lead] After the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on New York's World Trade Towers and the Pentagon, the debate surrounding racial profiling in airports intensified. Many people believed that profiling was the best way to identify possible terrorists, but many others worried about violations of civil liberties. [Bridge] Neither of these techniques have resulted in eliminating terrorism. [Thesis] However, if every airline traveller had a national ID card, airlines could screen for terrorists more effectively than they do now and avoid procedures that single out individuals solely on the basis of race.

Paragraphs should discuss individual points

•       Paragraph 1-  The advantages of introducing ID cards

•       Paragraph 2 –The ID card in Europe – plane high-jacking is rare in Europe, but does not solve all problems as there are still terrorist incidents in Europe, even if not on planes.

•       Paragraph 3 – Streamline surveillance procedures eliminating the tendency for racial profiling, thus protect civil liberties

Paragraph 1-  The advantages of introducing ID cards

[Topic Sentence] Perhaps the cheapest and most efficient security method would be a national ID card. [Support Info.] A form of these cards are already used in European countries for flight within the EU. These cards are about the size of a credit card and so they are easy to handle.[Unpack Supporting Info] Biometric information like fingerprint and iris patterns could be added without a great increase in the cost of production and this would help track travel patterns and detect suspect habits. [Concluding Statement] It is easy to see how such a card could expedite security checks at airports.

Connect paragraphs with transitional markers:  these act as a Bridge and take the reader from one point and leads to the next and show the connection between each major point. They are located in one of two places, either at the beginning of the paragraph (as a topic sentence) or at the end (as a summarization and transitional sentence.  Some words and phrases: as well as, likewise, therefore, yet, however, in contrast, in addition,  not only etc. are good transitional  markers.

Conclusions: It is important to have a strong conclusion, since this is the last chance you have to make an impression on your reader.  The goal of your conclusion isn’t to introduce any new ideas, but to sum up – without going over every detail – what you’ve written.  It should accomplish three major goals:

•       Restate the main idea of your essay, or your thesis statement

•       Summarize the most important points of your essay

•       Leave the reader with an interesting final impression

Example [Restate Thesis & Revisit Value of Essay] It is clear that the introduction of a national ID cards even for domestic travel would contribute to the safety of airline passengers. [Review Main Points] These cards would help screen passengers unobtrusively, while reducing the delays that currently characterize air travel. Most important, they would make air travel safer, while at the same time, protecting personal and civil liberties by making racial profiling unnecessary. [Leave Reader Thinking] Developing a national ID card system globally might be the first step to returning to a less fear driven while still safe society.
