1 Março 2018, 14:00 Cecília Maria Beecher Martins

Reading Comprehension exercises on text on Jim Crow Laws and Segregation in the Southern States of the United States. Class discussion of the topic in preparation for an essay to be written on the topic.

In class activity - begin the planning of the essay “The Factors that Led to the Outcomes of the Emmett Till case”

Planning the essay

  1. Read the title carefully - what is this essay going to be about? Time period, principle subject matter.
  2. Brainstorming
  3. See how elements on your brainstorming list can be/are connected
  4. Select 3 ideas that you think can be principle ideas – add supporting arguments
  5. Readjust – at this point you may see that one of your three ideas is a supporting idea, not a principle - readjust
  6. Select a thesis idea –your whole essay will revolve around this.
  7. Write a thesis statement that encompasses all your main ideas.

Example of weak vs strong thesis statement

Cigarette smoking wreaks havoc on the body - Weak thesis statement - vaguely worded and only states one fact that is common knowledge – adds nothing to the reader’s knowledge of the subject.

Cigarette smoking harms the body by constricting the blood vessels, accelerating the heartbeat, and activating excess gastric secretions in the stomach - An improved version – it is precise  and adds orientation for the essay to follow.

What type of an essay ? ask yourself am I going to present 2 perspectives (for & against; then & now; here & there)? Or am I going to focus on one central idea which I will support with different arguments.

Example of 1 perspective thesis statement: Cigarette smoking harms the body by constricting the blood vessels, accelerating the heartbeat, and activating excess gastric secretions in the stomach.

Example of 2 perspective thesis statement: As racial profiling methods have not worked, If every airline traveller had a national ID card, airlines could screen for terrorists more effectively than they do now and avoid procedures that single out individuals solely on the basis of race.
