first practical class, students were exposed to various resources related to
the post-WWII guest worker system, including the short film Inventur (1976),
Berger’s and Mohr's book A Seventh Man (1975), and Castles’s paper "The
Guestworker system: an obituary”. Debates occurred in small groups.

Course’s housekeeping. The history of migrations.

The first
part of this first theoretical class was dedicated to housekeeping, ie. Access
to Moodle, organisation of the course, resources, evaluation and other
important items.
Assessment:
Students in the Ordinary
Regime
The evaluation is composed
of two elements:
EV1. 1 written test (55%)
plus presence in class;
EV2. 3 exercises produced
in groups of 4/5 (max.) in the practical classes (45%).
Students in the Special
Regime:
EV1. 1 written test (70%);
EV2. 1 written essay
produced individually based on bibliographic references defined by the
lecturers (30%).
The second
part dealt with the history of migrations. A brief overview of migrations since
the Middle Ages enabled students to get a grasp of the importance of this
mobility, and its correlation with historical, economic and social events in
Europe and beyond. From WWII, migration intensified not only as a phenomenon,
but as a matter of studies in the academic realm.
