European Asylum policies.

This class focused on European Asylum policies. Students gathered in small groups to work on the four “chapters” of the class, and presented them to fellow students. The first group worked on international protection, its definition and legal frameworks. A second group worked on the distribution of asylum seekers, refugees and other individuals protected by international law across the EU. A third group worked on the Dublin regulation and the debates occurring between 2015 and 2018. The conclusions were explored altogether.

This practical class focused on migration policies, taking the example of the most recent policy reform under consultation in Portugal. Brining in a piece published on the Government portal, and a brief published by the collective Consortium Migration, students were encouraged to identify different “policy framings” sustaining the making of migration policy. This exercise was graded.

European Migration Policies at various levels.

This class focused on European Migration Policies. EU policies are considered at various levels: the legal framework offered by the different treaties of the EU, and directives transposable to national legal frameworks; the agendas, results of discussions and consensus across all EU member states, the last to date being the New Pact; and the mechanisms - agencies, budget and instruments - that enable the implementation of policies.

Exercices based on Jorgen Carling’s latest model of “capacity" and “aspirations”.

This practical class is based on Jorgen Carling’s latest model of “capacity" and “aspirations”. In small groups, students learnt to actively read this academic piece, and then use it to draw the decision tree of Becky, the main actress of the film Becky’s journey (2016), a Nigerian candidate to migration to Europe. This exercise was graded.
