The class continued with students’ revision of the short story translation, focusing on analyzing their specific translation choices and making adjustments to ensure closer alignment with their chosen method(s). We focused on the specific parts of the story where students had the most difficulty in translating and applying/examining the procedures they used.

Newmark’s Methods Applied in Literary Translation

This session focused on reviewing the first part of students’ Practical 2, specifically Tasks 1 and 3. The class discussion centered initially on determining which of Newmark’s method(s) would be most suitable for translating this particular text type and understanding the rationale behind these choices. We then examined students’ translations to assess whether they had successfully applied their chosen method(s) and identified necessary modifications to ensure compliance with their stated approach.

Newmark’s Translation Methods

This session introduced Peter Newmark’s translation methods, moving through definitions, key features, and practical contexts in which each method might be applied, with examples drawn from English-to-Portuguese translation. To ground the discussion, students were presented with lines from three Shakespearean plays and asked to translate each using both the semantic and communicative translation methods, exploring how the two approaches yield different results depending on the translator’s priorities.

Practical 2 was then introduced, requiring students to translate Simon Rich’s short story “Animals” into Portuguese while applying Newmark’s methods. After reading through portions of the story together as a class, students divided into groups to collaborate on developing a general translation strategy. The remainder of the session was devoted to group work, giving students the opportunity to begin their translations.
