Susan Sontag and Charlotte Wood: what is literature?



While analyzing Susan Sontag's quotations, the following must be addressed in greater detail:

•“I think I am ready to learn how to write. Think with words, not with ideas.” (Susan Sontag)
•The language of literature must be, therefore, the language of transgression, a rupture of individual systems, a shattering of psychic oppression. The only function of literature lies in the uncovering of the self in history. (Susan Sontag)
•“Literature is dialogue; responsiveness. Literature might be described as the history of human responsiveness to what is alive and what is moribund as cultures evolve and interact with one another.” (Susan Sontag)
•“Real art has the capacity to make us nervous. By reducing the work of art to its content and then interpreting that, one tames the work of art. Interpretation makes art manageable, comformable.” (Susan Sontag)
