Hempel´s style of writing is minimalistic, because she does not focus on the character and plot development traditionally associated with stories. It is not plot driven. However, it is deeply embedded in the American culture and requires vast knowledge to decipher the cultural references.
Instead, the focus is on presenting an experience.
This story centres on an unidentified first-person narrator, who is the best friend of a similarly unidentified terminally ill patient. An yet, we are aware that Hempel wrote the short-story after the death of her friend.
The short-story is a dance between introspection and retrospection.
It is embedded in humour and stories (end of the line, flamingos, Eskimos, subscription) as well as multiple reference to popular culture. What other funny moments and stories do you see?
