In-Class Writing
10 Outubro 2018, 10:00 • Hilda Alexandra Prazeres Eusebio
Students did the following in-class writing exercise:
-
B1.1 In-class Writing: Your Best House-share/Flat-share experience
Write a short piece (half a page of A4 or a full page of A5) describing the best house-share/flat-share experience of your life. If you’ve never shared a house or flat with anyone, describe the best memories you have of sharing a home with your family or partner.
Once they had written their pieces, the teacher marked them in-class and students were instructed to copy out the corrected pieces in full. Once this was done, students were instructed to read the following texto and answer the questions:
B1.1 Reading: Free Time

Students who did not come to class need not do this reading exercise at home as we will be doing it together in class.
Next class: Reading, Listening and, hopefully, if there's time, speaking.

TP1 began by doing their reading exercise:
B1 Reading: Accommodation
Those of you who missed class should read the text and answer the questions at home. Here is the link:

They then
went on to do their listening exercise:
B1.1 Listening: Accommodation
Those of you who missed class should listen to the recording and answer the questions at home. Here is the link: http://www.examenglish.com/B1/b1_listening_accommodation.htm
TP1 then went on to do their in-class speaking exercise in small groups: B1.1 Speaking: Your Worst House-share/Flat-share experience
- Share with the group your worst house-share/flat-share experiences. If you’ve never shared a house with anyone, describe the challenging aspects of sharing a home with your family or your partner.
Presentation #2
3 Outubro 2018, 14:00 • Rui Vitorino Azevedo
And the words are… For this mini-presentation I would like you to look up five of your favorite English words online (use a good dictionary, i.e. etymology or other). Once you have chosen your five words: 1) Tell us what these words mean to you. 2) Look up each word and see how it has evolved through time. Consider these questions: a. When was the word first introduced into the dictionary? b. Does the word have several senses/meanings? c. How has the meaning changed over the centuries? Is it possible to see a transition through time from an early meaning to a later one? In other words, can you see how one sense is connected to another? Or in some cases do words coin new definitions that are apparently unrelated? d. Remember that definitions depend on usage, and usage depends on context. 3) Present your findings, including examples that you may deem necessary.
