Reading and discussion of "Miss Smith". A horror genre?

No Class

11 Dezembro 2017, 12:00 Hilda Alexandra Prazeres Eusebio

Today's class did not happen as the teacher (Hilda Alexandra Eusébio) found herself cut from civilization due to Storm Ana (Tempestade Ana) and was unable to reach the train station in Faro, Algarve in time for her class.

People’s fears

Everyone is afraid of something and for this final presentation that’s what I want you speak about: fear. You can choose a rational fear or something that is a product of a traumatic experience. This could include specific phobias or diseases, or even common fears such as the fear of heights, public speaking, flying, snakes, spiders, etc. Another possibility is to discuss common fears from different nationalities. What do Americans or British people fear in comparison to the Portuguese? And why do you think those fears differ?

You could also take on a more scientific approach and look for an explanation. Which part of the brain triggers fear? How does it work?

It has also been argued, however, that there is a certain pleasure in fear – thus, the horror genre. Is this your case? Do you enjoy books or movies in the horror genre? Do you enjoy being scared? What has really scared you?

Now that’s intriguing!
For this presentation I want you to come up with five questions and (possible) answers for things that have always intrigued you.
Here are some examples just to entice your appetite:
1) What do animals think about?

2) Why do men have nipples?

3) Does the sky ever look the same twice?

4) Why do lightning bugs light up?

5) What makes things popular?

6) Why do people get jealous?
7) What is power?

8) Will time travel exist one day?

9) What would it be like if there was a third gender? or a fourth?

10) If your soul goes to heaven when you die, where was it before you came to Earth?

The idea is to have some fun but also to get you to think about things that have truly and sincerely intrigued you and to also find out what other people have said about this.

You may also present more than one answer to a question.
