And the words are…

For this mini-presentation I would like you to look up five of your favorite English words online (use the Oxford English Dictionary (http://www.oed.com/).  To have full access to the dictionary, you must access the link through a FLUL connection). If you cannot get full access to the OED, then try to use another good dictionary.

Once you have chosen your five words:
1)    Tell us what these words mean to you.
2)    Look up each word and see how it has evolved through time. Consider these questions:
a.     When was the word first introduced into the OED/dictionary?
b.     Does the word have several senses/meanings?
c.     How has the meaning changed over the centuries? Is it possible to see a transition through time from an early meaning to a later one? In other words, can you see how one sense is connected to another? Or in some cases do words coin new definitions that are apparently unrelated?
d.     Remember that definitions depend on usage, and usage depends on context.
3)    Present your findings, including examples that you may deem necessary

Special places – Look at the list of places below.

-          A cathedral or mosque

-          A castle

-          A concert hall

-          A famous street

-          A museum

-          A monument

-          A natural park

-          A shopping mall

Choose three that you know or have visited and that you believe your audience is not familiar with and prepare a mini-presentation where you answer some of the following questions:

1)          Is there anything special about the design?

2)      What did you think of this place?

3)      What is the area like around this place?

4)      Do you like going there?

5)      Have you seen any other areas that are similar?

Also try to be as descriptive as possible when talking about the places. For example, look at the phrases below that you can use:

-          Airy and Spartan

-          Archetypal multicolored stained-glass windows

-          Full of sculptures and angles and arches

-          Huge circle with red bricks

-          Built on huge ball bearings

-          Openness and whiteness
