Pair work activity: Vocabulary exercises. B1.2 Workbook p. 43a-45.

Group activity: Which words are British? Which words are American? Each group received 24 words in an envelope along with two different coloured sheets of paper: one for the words from the UK and one for the ones from the USA. Sts had to decide which were American or British expressions: pants, trousers, torch, flashlight, underground, subway, neighbour, neighbor, travelled, traveled, French fries, chips, etc. At the end of the exercise, 2 students were asked to write the words on the whiteboard.

Correcting the tests

Test correction: Common mistakes were discussed and analysed. Special attention was given to the confusable irregular verbs: (to) lie and (to) lay.

Test on Irregular verbs (3 exercises), Irregular Plurals (1 exercise), Present Perfect Tense (3 exercises), Vocabulary: crime, environmental issues, etc. (3 exercises), Summary Writing (1 exercise).

Reading exercise: B1.2 Workbook p. 39-43.a

Pair work activity: Pre-reading exercise: 5 words had to be located in the text and defined without consulting any dictionary.

How to give an oral presentation: planning a presentation about a book/film; top tips for an oral presentation; a model presentation.

Further practice in writing a discursive essay: (a) linking devices; (b) writing the final draft of an opinion essay on the following topic: "Globalisation will eventually lead to a complete loss of cultural identity". HOMEWORK: 1. Finish your essay at home and submit it on Wednesday. 2. Do the transformation exercise sent by email (e.g. rewrite the sentences with the new beginning)
