Introduction to C2 English in the World of the Arts

Today's lesson was just an introduction to the course.


Students who missed today's class need to read the course book so that they know exactly what is expected of them this semester.

The course book and all of the many resources that students will need will be made available on the shared Google drive as soon as possible.  The course book can be printed out at home and brought to class, or you can access the course book via laptop or tablet.  Accessing the course book in class on your smart phone is not allowed.

Students who don't have a printer at home can print out the course book at the Red Photocopy Room (reprografia vermelha) which is located in the basement of the Law Faculty.  

In order to have access to the shared Google drive, students must email (hilda.eusebio@edu.ulisboa.pt) to confirm that the teacher has their permission to add their email to the shared Google drive.

Course description 

This syllabus incorporates the CEFR guidelines for Academic English at a C2 level. It will focus on acquiring and practicing the vocabulary and structures necessary to reflect critically on ourselves, our writing and artistic content throughout the World of the Arts.  

In groups, students will prepare a glossary for analyzing a wide range of arts and then apply that vocabulary to the critique of their own writing, that of their colleagues and a series of different genres of art. At least one field trip will be required (potential exemption for worker-students). In addition, a variety of writing exercises at the C2 level will be completed to widen students’ range of written and spoken language in a range of registers.  

Grading and Assessment (in language of instruction) 

A student-centered teaching approach will be used following a task-based methodology.  

10% - Group Project – Vocabulary for Reviewing Art Forms 

15% - Review Diary 5 reviews of five different art formsPeer review. 

15% - At-home composition perfecting one of the diary reviews to publication standard. 

15% - Oral Presentation (8-10m). “I was surprised to find…”  

20 % - Final Test (1 Review, Vocabulary and Grammar)  

10% - CPE Reading and Use of English, parts 2, 3, 4 and 5.  

15% - Continuous Assessment – Attendance, class participation, homework, group work, and preparation of readings
