Syllabus and Presentation Topics

Reviewed the syllabus with students, including the assessment criteria. 

Also looked at the several presentation topics students can choose from for their individual presentations throughout the semester.


Introduction and Programme

C1.1.

The course will focus on the following areas:

1. Essay writing within a university context

·         Conventions of academic essay writing

·         Developing criticality

·         Text organization

·         Characteristics of Introductions and conclusions

·         Writing a thesis statement

·         Hedging language, passive voice and discourse markers

2. Cinema – critical review of two films reflecting life in Britain

3. Short stories – two texts by contemporary British authors for analysis and discussion

4. Students will practice structured oral presentations with the support of Power Point based on an analysis of the films and texts used in class

Oral presentations – students in groups of 4 look for a British short story (contemporary from 2010-2020) and present it to the class via Power Point.

Class participation – contribution to discussion and analysis- students must attend 70% of classes.


Assessment

In-class writing – October 28 -                                                  10%

Test on short story and film - November 9                      25%

In class writing – Dec 7 -                                                              10%

Test on film and short story (2) – Dec 16 -                              30%

Oral Presentations – Nov 30; Dec 9 and 14 –                      15%

Participation and attendance -                                                 10%

 

All tests and assignments for evaluation will be in-class.
