Introduction to the Second Person Narrative

30 Janeiro 2023, 15:30 Hilda Alexandra Prazeres Eusebio

After reading a lovely introduction on the second person narrative on Book Riot (12 of the Best Books Written in the Second Person | Book Riot), we went on to read our first second person short story, The Kid's Guide to Divorce by Lorrie Moore.

Students who missed today's class should read the webpage (link above) and the short story as soon as possible.

Please explore the following aspects:
  • how the second voice affects the reader in this particular text;
  • how does it differ in tone from the more common, more predictible second voice texts;
  • notice how the author alternates between the imperative (when talking to 'you') and future tenses when talking about/describing everything around them;
  • notice how we don't know the names of any of the characters or even the gender of the main character.
    • What does this all mean?
Next class: we will be reading/analyzing How to talk to a Hunter by Pam Houston.
