Nature and the 4 causes in Physics 2.1-3

9 Fevereiro 2023, 14:00 Wolfgang Sattler

We read and discussed passages from Physics 2.1, in particular about Aristotle's concept of a nature, and about some arguments for the view that form is nature more than matter. Furthermore, we had a look in Physics 2.3 at the examples given for the 4 causes, and at some further distinctions within one kind of cause.

Aristotle's basic model of change in Physics 1.7

We had a look at a paradox about change mentioned in Physics 1.8, what seem to be its sources, and Aristotle's basic model of change in Physics 1.7.

Topics from the Categories

We discussed several passages in the Categories, in particular in Cat 5, how we should understand Aristotle's claim that nothing could exist if primary substances did not exist; and what being a 'tode ti' amounts to; and in Cat 2, what it means to be an individual/indivisible (atomon); and what Aristotle's characterisation of 'being in' amounts to. We had a look at the different senses of being 'in' distinguished in the beginning of Physics 4.3, and in Metaphysics 5.23.

A look at the Categories

30 Janeiro 2023, 14:00 Wolfgang Sattler

We went through Aristotle's views in Categories 1-5 and familiarised ourselves with Aristotle's terminology there. This included in particular the concepts of synonymy, homonymy, and paronymy in Categories 1, the 10 categories or highest kinds of being with substance as the primary kind of being, the so-called 'ontological square' in Categories 2 and the underlying ontological relations (inherence, being said of), and Aristotle's reasons why individual substances are substances in the primary sense. We also had a look at the debate in the literature of whether individual accidentals are repeatable or non-repeatable entities.

Discussion of topics from Metaphysics A.1-3

26 Janeiro 2023, 14:00 Wolfgang Sattler

We were discussing together selected passages from Metaphysics A.1-3. This included in particular Aristotle's distinction of different forms of cognition, his mention of the four causes, and his characterisation of some of the views of the early philosophers of nature. We also had a look at Ross' commentary of the Metaphysics.
