Caros Estudantes,
A mensagem de hoje não é para vos passar mais trabalho, agora que muitos já enviaram a ficha de leitura (28). É apenas para partilhar convosco um texto dom poeta português, Manuel António Pina, que segue abaixo.
Muitos de vós devem ter ainda avós e imagino que estejam preocupados com eles. A imagem de tranquilidade comunicada por este poema pode ajudar-vos a pensar positivo relativamente aos vossos avós que têm uma outra maneira de lidar com o tempo e de assim se defenderem.

Tinha ao colo o gato velho
cansadamente passando
a sua branca mão pelo
pêlo dele preto e brando
Sentada ao pé da janela
Olhando a rua ou sonhando-a
Todo o passado passando
a passos lentos por ela
Dormiam ambos enquanto
a tarde se ia acabando
o gato dormindo por fora
a avó dormindo por dentro

Dear Students,
While you’re busy with the summary assignment (Raymond Williams, “Literature”), I would like to share with you the following poem by Philip Larkin (see below).
I hope it’s thought-provoking but that it may also act as a sign of hope for the future as well as a realistic awareness of death and its inevitability. Note, however, how powerful the final incitement is: “Begin afresh”… everyday!

The Trees
The trees are coming into leaf
Like something almost being said;
The recent buds relax and spread,
Their greenness is a kind of grief.
Is it that they are born again
And we grow old? No, they die too,
Their yearly trick of looking new
Is written down in rings of grain.
Yet still the unresting castles thresh
In fullgrown thickness every May.
Last year is dead, they seem to say,
Begin afresh, afresh, afresh.

As the mid-term test revealed that the students had struggled on - and finally misunderstood - crucial pieces of information concerning the different theories of literature that developed in 20th century, the first part of the course has been revised under a slightly altered perspective.
