Martin Luther

Rodrigo Ferreira gave a short presentation on Joachim du Bellay: Defense and Illustration of the French Language, which was followed by class discussion and an in-class quiz. Translation techniques such as word-for-word, sense-for-sense translation and adaptation were also revisited.


Sts watched a video on Martin Luther:

Then they were divided into pairs or group of three, and asked to take a quiz based on the video and their previous knowledge.

Sts were asked to read the "An Open Letter on Translation" by Luther by 28 November, as there will be a brief quiz on the text.

Antiquity and Translation

Please note that the end-term test will take place in a different room: Anfiteatro I on the 12th of December.

The lecturer spoke about the importance of Cicero and St. Jerome's contributions to Translation History. We reviewed the concepts of "word-for-word" (metaphrase) and "sense-for-sense" (paraphrase), along with the idea of imitation (adaptation, terms coined by John Dryden).

The students worked in pairs on a Google Form exercise. 

Following that we watched a video about the Septuagint 

and completed another short-answer exercise on Google Forms:


Reformation

Sts delivered presentations on Martin Luther and the martyr translators: William Tyndale and Étienne Dolet. We explored the significant role that translating the Bible played in the spread of religious ideas during the Reformation. The first presentation highlighted how Luther's efforts to make the Scriptures accessible in vernacular languages not only transformed the understanding of Christianity but also promoted the value of individual interpretation of the faith. We also discussed the dangers these translators faced in their pursuit of making the Bible available to the common people.

Sts watched a short film on literary translations, created by Peter Constantine and Brian Sneeden from the University of Connecticut.

Then Sts took a short google form quiz related to the video. They could work in pairs or individually.
