Basic narratological concepts: characters; narrator and types of narrators; the importance of time and how it is used: time of the story and time of discourse; scenes, descriptions, digressions, summaries and ellipses; from scenes to narration; the importance of space. Points of view: the use of reflector characters and reflectorisation (F. K. Stanzel). Free indirect speech and interior monologue. The stream of consciousness technique (Woolf and Joyce).

Some examples from Tracy Chevalier's Girl with a Pearl Earring. Chevalier's starting point: Vermeer's painting Girl with a Pearl Earring.

Analysis of some of Vermeer's paintings and a brief introduction to the painter's life and work.
