Continued reviewing verb tenses by doing several practical exercises. Discussed "Miss Smith" a bit further and did a vocab exercise on "People: character and behaviour".


Listening, reading, speaking...

Is there is no speaker in PN14, we couldn't do our listening exercise last class.  Therefore, the first thing we did when we started class today was we carried out the following listening exercise: B1.1 Listening: Accommodation.  If you missed class, click on the link and do it at home.

They then did the following reading and listening exercises: B1.1 Reading: Free Time and B1.1 Listening: Free Time Activities.  Again, if you missed class, make sure you click and catch up:

We then had loads of fun with the following speaking exercise: B1.1 Speaking: Free Time Bingo.

Their instructions were to take their Bingo Card and walk around the room and ask people whether or not they had ever done/whether or not they enjoyed the activities listed on the table.  The first person to fill in their card shouted ‘Bingo!’ 

Homework - B1.1 Writing: Nothing but Free Time

Write a piece about what you would do with your time if you won the lottery and why. The assignment should be 150-200 words long.  Please write your name and class number (TP3) at the beginning of your assignment.

It is due on the 19th October and should be emailed to me.

Usage

Pair work activity: Sts had to form the rules based on bunches of example sentences.

1. Habitual events in the past: always, often, sometimes, frequently

He often drank tea at breakfast.

She always ate fish.

They watched television frequently.

I sometimes walked home at lunchtime.

Most evenings, we stayed at home and watched DVDs.

 

2. A definite point in time: last week, yesterday, six weeks ago, last night, last year

Last year, I didn't travel to Korea.

He didn't wash his car.

 

3. Telling a  story, past actions

The four travelers passed a sleepless night, each thinking

of the gift Oz had promised to bestow on him.

 

Once when I was six years old I saw a magnificent picture in a book, called

True Stories from Nature, about the primeval forest. It was a picture of

a boa constrictor in the act of swallowing an animal.

 

 

I finished work, walked to the beach, and found a nice place to swim.

 

Past Continuous Tense

1. Interrupted action in the past

I was having a beautiful dream when the alarm clock rang.

Hilda was dancing, but when she saw me, she stopped.

The phone rang, while I was having my bath, as usual.

I was talking to the Prime Minister the other day, when a reporter interrupted us.

 Last night at 6 PM, I was eating dinner.

At midnight, we were still driving through the desert.

Yesterday at this time, I was sitting at my desk at work.

 

2. Parallel actions

I was studying while he was making dinner.

While Ellen was reading, Tim was watching television.

Were you listening while he was talking?

I wasn't paying attention while I was writing the letter, so I made several mistakes.

What were you doing while you were waiting?

Thomas wasn't working, and I wasn't working either.

They were eating dinner, discussing their plans, and having a good time.

 

3. Atmosphere

The sun was shining and the birds were singing as the elephant came out of the jungle. The other animals were relaxing in the shade of the trees, but the elephant moved very quickly. She was looking for her baby, and she didn't notice the hunter who was watching her through his binoculars. When the shot rang out, she was running towards the river..."

 

When I walked into the office, several people were busily typing, some were talking on the phones, the boss was yelling directions, and customers were waiting to be helped. One customer was yelling at a secretary and waving his hands. Others were complaining to each other about the bad service.

 

4. Annoying actions: with always, forever, constantly, all the time

Jack and Jill were always arguing!

She was always coming to class late.

He was constantly talking. He annoyed everyone.

I didn't like them because they were always complaining.
