Present Simple

Spelling:

1. Verbs ending in the letter ‘y’

marry marries, cry  _______, apply  _______, hurry  _______, try  _______, worry  _______

Exception: if there is a vowel before the -y:
play --> plays, pay --> _____________, enjoy --> _____________, pray--> __________________

2. Verbs ending in ending in: -ss, -x, -sh, -ch

pass passes, fix____________, mix ___________, push  ___________, catch ___________

3. Verbs ending in: -o

go goes, do____________, undo ____________, echo____________

1) Habits

He drinks tea at breakfast. She only eats fish. They watch television regularly.

2) Repeated actions

We catch the bus every morning. It rains every afternoon in the hot season. They drive to Monaco every summer.

3) General truths and facts

Water freezes at zero degrees. The Earth goes around the Sun. Money doesn’t grow on trees.

4) Giving instructions and directions

Open the packet and pour the contents into hot water.

First you roll out the pastry, then you cut circles with a cup or a glass.

You take the bus number 711 to Rossio and then the number 735  to Cidade Universitária.

5) Schedules, timetables and itineraries (travelling, cinema, etc.)

Our flight leaves at 12:30. The train leaves Plymouth at 10:15 and arrives in London at 14:00. Our holiday starts on the 26th March.

Your exam starts at 09.00.

6) After conjunctions: when, after, before if, as soon as, until

Spelling:

2. Happening in a period of time around the present moment/ Temporary states and actions

Sophie wants to go to Italy. She is learning Italian now.

3. Gradual changes

Your English is getting better and better.

More and more people are becoming vegetarian.

The population of the world is rising very fast.

4. With "always, forever, constantly", it is used to describe annoying or frustrating actions

You are always complaining about everything!

You're constantly complaining about your mother-in-law!

Jack and Jill are always arguing!

Mom is always forgetting where she has parked her car, so we usually get home late.

5. Future plans and arrangements

I’m going to the dentist on Tuesday at 10 a.m.

What time are you meeting Ann tomorrow?

What time Jane is arriving tomorrow? What time are you leaving?

At 10:30 I’m meeting her at the station.
