Fears and phobias.

1) Warm-up: recycling vocabulary, flash cards: setting, withholding evidence, stab, line-up, one-way mirror, etc.

2) Pair work activity, Vocabulary and Speaking: Each group had a piece of paper with different phobia types. Sts had to guess the objects of fear:

acousticophobia ,acrophobia, agoraphobia, androphobia, Anglophobia, arachnophobia, aviophobia, bacillophobia, Bolshephobia, carcinophobia, chromophobia, claustrophobia, coulrophobia, cyclophobia, dentophobia, Francophobia, hydrophobia , insectophobia, musophobia, wiccaphobia, zoophobia, venustraphobia, andphasmophobia.

After 3-minute guessing, another piece of paper was handed out with the list of related objects of fear, but in ABC order:

animals, beautiful women, bicycles, Bolsheviks, Britain, cancer, clowns, colours, confined spaces, dentists, flying, France, ghosts, heights, insects, noise, open spaces, spiders, water, witches, men, mice, microbes.


3) Sts then had to choose 1 phobia they could easily identify themselves with, and discuss it in group.


4) Pair work activity: Speaking Exercise 2 (animals and fear) B1.2 Workbook, page 29

5) Checking homework: Reading Comprehension: Exercise 3, 4, 6 page 33-34.

6) Pair work activity, Speaking: Exercise 5, Discussion: “Humiliating situations and teachers” page 33.


Simple Past, Present Perfect, Past Perfect. Summary writing. Letters of advice.

Grammar practice: checking homework exercises about the following verb forms: Simple Past, Present Perfect, Past Perfect; Active vs Passive voice.

Revising the structure of a letter of advice and summary-writing rules in preparation for the test.

"My Extreme Animal Phobia explores fears of creatures big and small": (a) writing a summary of the article continued (in-class pair/group assignment); (b) feedback on students' summaries. 

Optional: further practise in writing a letter of advice (started in class and continued at home). Letters of advice should be about the problems already sent in a PDF file. In case you didn't attend the class but want to practise writing a letter of advice you should it by email till Friday at lunchtime so that you can receive my feedback before the day of the test (which will be held on 18th March, as you know).

"My Extreme Animal Phobia explores fears of creatures big and small": (a) watching part of the TV show My Extreme Animal Phobia; (b) reading the text and taking notes with a view to writing a summary; (c) writing a summary of the article (to be continued on Wednesday): in-class assignment. 

HOMEWORK: (a) Simple Past vs Present Perfect (pages 58-61); (b) A fill-in-the-blanks exercise (sent by email); (c) optional further practice in writing a letter of advice (sent by email).


Sport Challenges: Listening.

Warm-up: Pair work activity: Half of the Sts got pictures depicting sports, other half had the name of the sports on a piece of paper. They had to stand up, and find their matching partner. Then they had to work together and give a short definition of the sport selected in front of the class. Using key expressions such as group—individual sport, racing/ combat/ water/ winter/extreme sport, ball game, racket game, etc.

Vocabulary: scuba diving, snorkelling, hang gliding, diving, fencing, horse riding, cycling, kitesurfing, water ski, surfing, judo, swimming.

All drawings were fixed on the Whiteboard with blu tack.

Pair work activity: Each student had to choose 3 sports from the whiteboard she or he had already tried, and 3 she or he had not, then to speak about their experiences and dreams to be fulfilled.
