Final Debates.

28 Maio 2018, 14:00 Hilda Alexandra Prazeres Eusebio

Today we had our third and fourth debates.

The debates were:

Debate 3: “Bullfighting should be abolished.” - FOR: Sara Santos, Sofia Paulo, Marta Silva; AGAINST: Mariana Roque

And the winner was...the FOR team!  Well done to all debaters - a special congratulations to Mariana Roque who debated singlehandedly!!

Debate 4: “Gun Control is the key to keeping the peace.” - FOR:  Sofia Calmeiro, Inês Antunes, Raquel Aguiar; AGAINST:  Vasco Monteiro, Gonçalo Cruz, João Henriques.

And the winner was...the FOR team!  Well done everybody.

Next class: the end-of-semester test.

The test.
  1. The test will consist of ONE ESSAY QUESTIONYou will have four or five to choose from
  2. The essay question topics will be:
    • tabloids vs broadsheets
    • national identity
    • Salmon Fishing in the Yemen
      • I hope you have all read the novel by now!
What to bring.
This is an open-note test (i.e. you can consult your notes and stuff.) So please bring:
  1. The novel, in hard copy.  (Electronic copies will not be allowed as no electronic equipment is allowed during the test.)
  2. The course book.
  3. Your class notes.
What NOT to bring.
While this is an open-note test, you may NOT bring other articles unless you are prepared to hand these in to me along with your test so that I can check for plagiarism.  If you are not prepared to hand these articles in, then I DO NOT WANT TO SEE other articles on your desks or in your notebooks.  I will be checking people's note books for signs of articles.
What is expected of you.
  1. The essay will be a FORMAL ACADEMIC ESSAY, therefore:
    • no contractions of any kind should be used (e.g. 'he's' instead of 'he is'), unless you are quoting a source that uses contractions (e.g. a quote from the novel will almost certainly have contractions in it.)
    • no personal pronouncs may be used (i.e. do not refer to yourself in the first person, as I demonstrated in class when we looked at formal essays).
    • you must include at least two quotes from either the articles in your coursebook or from the novel (depending on which question you choose).  You must reference these in the essay properly.
    • you must include a references page at the end of your essay.
That's all folks.
