Second person short stories - How to Talk to a Hunter by Pam Houston

10 Outubro 2022, 17:00 Hilda Alexandra Prazeres Eusebio

Today we read and analyzed How to talk to a Hunter by Pam Houston.

Students who missed today's class should read the above text as soon as possible.  Please explore the following aspects:
  • how the second voice affects the reader in this particular text;
  • how does it differ in tone from the more common, more predictible second voice texts;
  • how does it differ/it what way is it similar to A Kid's Guide to Divorce;
  • notice how the author alternates between the imperative (when talking to 'you') and future tenses when talking about/describing everything around them;
  • notice how we don't know the names of any of the characters (except for Janie Coyote and we suspect, quite rightly, that it is a fake name).
    • What does this all mean?
Next class: we will be reading/analyzing a third person text True Trash by Margart Atwood.

Today we read True Trash by Margaret Atwood.

Those who did not come to today's class must read this at home.  It is available on the One Drive.

Homework: finish reading the story.

Questions for you:
  • What are the links between the 'trashy' story that the girls are reading and their own story?  What common themes do they share?  How are the plots similar?
  • What are the many layers of meaning to be found in th title?
  • What are the less obvious themes to be found in this story?  I.e. It's about more than sex and gender - what is it really about?
