Warm-up: some common errors

Class discussion on the nature of racism and its manifestation in children. Presentation about the brown eye/blue eye experiment by Jane Elliott in 1968 and about racism in children’s books.

Small group discussions based on questions about Little Black Sambo and Epaminondas and his Auntie (both read for homework).

Reading of The Story of Babar by Jean de Brunhoff, followed by small group exercise working through a worksheet to guide students to see the (not so) hidden racism in the book. Feedback and class discussion.
